About Melvina…
Melvina’s gravestone is a good example of how names can be ‘changed’ either accidentally or on purpose. All census records show her name spelled with an ‘e’, and Iva (Huckaby) Johnson also spelled her name that way. Yet here on the stone, it’s spelled with an ‘a’. Often it was the census takers who misspelled names. (Note the 1870 census: you’ll find “Pensylvania” and “Virginnia.”)
